2.2 Compensation of TN LCD

Chen proposed [2] a compensation film for E-mode TN LCD using two positive O -plates having the same tilt angle and phase retardation values. The compensation film was applied on both sides of the TN liquid crystal cell. In this study, we examined a configuration where two positive O-plates have different optical properties. As an example, Figure 2 is an isocontrast plot corresponding to the compensation film having the following parameters,θV1 = 70 °,θV2 = 30 °,θV3 = 10 °, andθV4 = 0°, and the substrate has Rth = -160 nm. Phase retardation values for C and D are 100 nm and 40 nm, respectively. The film is applied to the E-mode TN LCD and placed on both sides of a TN LC cell. The compensation film is placed such that the O -plate E is adjacent to the TN LC cell, and x direction is perpendicular to the rubbing direction of the bordering TN LCD cell bounding plane. The new compensation film has a contrast ratio higher than 50 in almost all viewing angles up to 80° off the normal viewing direction. The isocontrast line corresponding to 100 runs beyond 70 °. This is a significant improvement over the previously known compensation scheme. Such a compensation film is also applicable to O-mode TN LCD. In this case, θV1= 60°, θV2 = 20° , θV3= 20°, θV4= 0 °, and the retardation of C and D are 140 nm and 120 nm, respectively. The substrate has Rth= -120 nm. The corresponding isocontrast plot is shown in Figure 3.

2.2 Compensation of OCB LCD

OCB mode LCD is based on a symmetric bend state in a nematic liquid crystal. In its actual operation, the brightness of the display is controlled by an applied voltage that leads to a different degree of bend orientation within the cell. It is known to have a fast response as a result of a lack of reverse torque generation. The placement of the compensation films is shown in Figure 4. The direction of transmission axes of two polarizers and the optic axis directions of four positive A- plates are indicated by arrows. Ωand Σare compensation films having structures shown in Figure 1. These films are placed such that the x and y axes form a 45 ° angle with respect to the βand γaxes. The directions of placement are shown for compensation films Ωand Σ in Figure 5 with respect to the coordinate system (α - β- γ) attached to the display [6] . Both positive O-plates have the same properties. The tilt angles are θV1=θV3= 85° and θV2 = θV4= 5 ° . The positive A- plates placed adjacent to the polarizers have retardation values of 90 nm, whereas the ones closer to the liquid crystal cell have values of 30 nm. The negative C -plates have retardation of - 350 nm. A contrast ratio of 10 or higher is obtained in most of the viewing angle directions up to 80 ° off the normal viewing direction (see Figure 6).
